C. S. Lewis is one of the most unique Christian authors of all time. I've been meeting with people from a wide variety of backgrounds for spiritual direction for 35 years and have never had one who didn't like him. I think one reason for this is the depth and integrity of his spiritual search, which he shared in his book, "Surprised by Joy." There, he bares his soul, tracing his spiritual journey from his Anglican upbringing through a period of intense atheism, then a spiritual search that included his study of philosophies and mythologies, one of which he considered Christianity to be. . . until he eventually discovered its historical basis.
I've always appreciated his grasp of the English language -- of using precisely the right words to accurately express his true thoughts. Language, for Lewis, is revelatory, which is so contrary to the present-day tendency to use it to obfuscate. I love his humor, too, which he never uses to ridicule others, but in the service of humility and even wonder.

"Surprised by Joy" is a delightful book, and I've recently discovered a movie version, "The Most Reluctant Convert," which is free to Amazon.com members and no doubt available on other movie channels as well. It's only 73 min. long with excellent acting.
