I am an evangelical christian- open minded and just your run of the mill Christian guy with no knowledge of weird hippy stuff , that was me last year anyway but not now.

In May last year coming out of a really bad few months of depression and also turning from a faith questioning sin filled almost nominal christian faith existence I picked up a book at the college library about Jesus as a reliable historical figure and the writings that support it

I read a book that showed me how reliable the gospels are and and how everything I was questioning was pointless. As I put it down I realised I had been away from God for incredibly stupid reasons.

As I worked my way through this book I began to be drawn back to my first love. I remember I was reading about the gnostic gospels bit and quite satisfied how anyone should believe jesus is who he said he was. At this point for the first time in years my faith was restored fully.

I was overjoyed and decided to pray deeply in the spirit for an hour or more. It was really beautiful I had missed the union with God, because I was so excited to be in prayer again I couldn't wait to go to bed and be in Gods presence.

After a couple of days this happened-

I was deep in prayer to god praying in the spirit. While I was feeling god’s love and spirit all around me, it seemed like all I could think of was god’s love. This is the weird part- All of a sudden the black room filled with stars it seemed and I felt as though I was propelled in a black tube full of stars really quickly, (thought I was dead and going to meet dead relatives) I do not know what this is all about. What happened at the same time was it felt like something
was going in or out of my forehead almost like slight burning energy or something. It made my muscles spasm in my hand and leg.
It gave me a headache like pressure there on my forehead for about 10 days. Over the next few weeks I had really odd dreams and visions, at night.

A couple of days after I noticed I could see Smokey auras around people, and some other odd things.

I felt as though I was existing in 2 places at once day and night.

Man it was scary I have no idea what caused it.

I wondered if it was demonic and stayed in constant prayer with god because I was worried.

Its not medical as I got tested by eye and head specialists and doctors in many ways about the auras I’m perfectly healthy.

The weird thing is the sensing energy with my aura as though when things pass through my bodies energy field that surrounds my hands it tingles and is like a pressure. You can sorta find objects with your eyes closed by sensing at a distance. Its unreliable and pretty useless for anything.

I am a christian that has this sorta psychic stuff and it started with the lord in prayer. It seems at at odds with what I am supposed to believe. It is confusing.

Lol i wish I had a dollar for all the times I have been pronounced demon possessed on forums in the last year. Frowner

Hi Chris. Thanks for sharing your experience here.

It sounds like you had a kundalini arousal or maybe even an awakening during your prayer. This is not well-understood in Christianity, but it's not uncommon, either. Seeing auras and the kind of sensitivity you describe is usually associated with the opening of the 3rd eye or Ajna Chakra (rooted in the pineal gland in the brain); this often happens with K activity.

In Christianity we understand this to be concomitant phenomena -- inessential, and accompanying something else that's going on. This surely doesn't mean it's demonic, only that we shouldn't get caught up in it or confuse it with the action of the Holy Spirit.

There are lots of interesting experiences shared on this particular forum and I thank you for your contribution here. The more such we can gather, the better we will come to understand this phenomenon. Please keep us posted on how it's going.

Peace, Phil

This is really interesting, Chris. A long time ago (10 years?) I had a similar "vision" experience. In my experience, I was praying and kind of fell into a trance-like state, and I saw the night, star-filled sky "roll out" across my field of vision, going from right to left, until I seemed to be in space. I then saw a shining, dancing purple light in the midst of the night sky, and I just stared at it for a while. I never saw auras, but I had intense, vivid dreams for a long time afterward and it marked the beginning of many more spiritual experiences.

I was just starting to study Kabbalah at the time, and after that "vision" I did some digging. What I found is a teaching on the "seven heavens." The "first heaven" is called "Vilon" or "veil," and it's said that it shields the heavens during the day and "rolls down" at night. It's said to be the main source of prophetic visions.

This doesn't really explain anything for you, I just wanted to let you know that sometimes the Spirit leads us into strange places that shake our belief systems, and it's always for the good.

the longer this goes on the more I like it though my wife laughs at me when I look at auras. Auras are very overrated I dont know why anyone would seek it. I just see the white smokey layers on the outside and a little color inside people.

What the lord opened my eyes to is scary. He showed me the way my fellow believers treat people who have different beliefs and the intolerance...

I also realized how much superstition is in Christianity and how fears from circulating myths are hindering the holy spirits work, and everything that's not understood is labeled satanic or demonic whether it actually is or not.

I have been struggling with the is it of the lord or the devil with all of this.

It was so funny when I first experienced this showing a pastor who was praying for me out the front where his aura was. (this was just harmless and normal to me) but scared him badly.

Right, Chris. Hence, the importance of a sound theological and philosophical foundation to help sort out issues. E.g., in many Christian traditions, it seems there are only three actors on the stage: God, devil and ego. So if something happens to me and I (ego) didn't cause it and can't explain it in terms of my own ego dynamics, then it must be from God or the devil. As they are confident they know all about how God operates, then if as phenomenon doesn't fall into their interpretive framework, that leaves the devil as the source of the phenomenon. But what about the unconscious, which includes the "higher" dimensions of human potential, including, here, the psychic?

See chapter 2 in a book I co-authored with Jim Arraj on Critical Questions in Christian Contemplative Practice for a discussion of this.

Of course, for many Christians, the whole idea of contemplative practice itself is suspect to begin with.
