Ray Charles Robinson, who passed last June, was one of the great musicians and entertainers of our time. His exceptional hearing allowed him to become an accomplished mimic and adapter of other styles. In one scene in a club, a couple gets up and accuses him of using the Lord's music to promote sex and the Devil, a formula which proved successfull for more than one entertainer in the last fifty years. Ray is shown reading his braille Bible, even during his long addiction to heroin and members of the Raelettes. He eventually kicked the habit and remained clean and honest for 40 years, which is a statistical near impossibility if you ask certain "experts" in the field. The episode in which he refuses to play in a segregated bar in Georgia, and is banned from playing there "for life," and the apology he recieved from the Georgia legislature in 1979 are memorable scenes. Great performances which really made me believe I was there with Ray and a good script and music. A great American story and I'm glad to see it. | |||
