Coup versus democracy: a time for truth Login/Join

"Lying is destructive of society; it undermines trust among people and tears apart the fabric of social relationships."
- "Catechism of the Catholic Church," #2487
_______________

Since the end of the 2020 election, President Trump has put forth countless allegations of voter fraud, illegal voting, rigged voting machines, and other irregularities that, cumulatively, he alleges, cost him the election. He's done this through Tweets, speeches, interviews, and via his supporters in the media and Congress.
- Around 60 failed lawsuits and state recounts of votes have demonstrated that these claims are unfounded.
- The USDOJ investigated fraud and found none.
- The USDHS claims there's no fraud.
And yet Trump and his supporters continue their crusade to dismiss the election of Joe Biden and install Trump instead as the rightful next President of the U.S.

At this point, it should be clear that there is no legal or moral basis for mistrusting the results of the 2020 election. None! To press the issue henceforth constitutes the promotion of lies and misinformation -- a sinful situation! The consequences for doing so are precisely what the Catechism mentions: ruptured relationships, social divisions, and a denigration of U.S. democracy.

The root of this problem should be called out across the land: it is President Trump's unwillingness to acknowledge his loss in an election where numerous Republicans flipped Democrats out of office. Narcissist that he is, Trump cannot admit defeat, so he would rather promote the fiction that the only reason he lost (and, presumably, other Republicans won?) is that the election was rigged against him. Anyone whose reason is still working properly should be able to see that the problem is Trump's denial, not the election. Those who still promote Trump's delusional beliefs about the election are therefore complicit in the division that is weakening the country. So are media that prostitute themselves to Trump for the advertising revenue his base generates for them. Church leaders are the worst of the lot, as our Lord identifies himself with Truth, not lies.

So now is the time for Truth-speakers to speak up. It's a simple message:
1. Biden won the election on November 3, 2020.
2. There was no widespread fraud nor irregularities that contributed to Biden's win.
3. Around 60 court cases confirm point #2.
4. In the U.S., when our preferred candidate loses, we accept the results and move on.
5. The effort to overturn a legal and valid election constitutes an attempted coup.

There's no middle-ground between supporting a coup and accepting election results. The former strategy is immoral and treasonous, the latter is moral and democratic.

Time to choose which side you're on.

Yesterday, the Electoral College voted to elect Joe Biden as President. All went as expected, with no faithless electors. This formally declares Biden the winner, and Sen. Mitch McConnell congratulated him for the victory. Vladimir Putin of Russia weighed in as well, congratulating Biden.

President Trump said nothing about the EC vote, but continues to press ahead with lawsuits, now with new ones in New Mexico, a state he lost by 11% and almost 100,000 votes. He also continues to Tweet and re-Tweet false information about voter fraud and machines malfunctioning. It's clear that he has no plans to conceded and might never do so.

It's likely that Trump will attempt to have Congress deny the EC tally and contest the vote, but this is sure to fail as the House of Representatives (majority D) would have to go along with it.

What is most sad in all this is the influence Trump has on millions, who believe that he is right and American democracy is wrong. Trump has even called America's election process "third world." What's worse, his psychopathology has produced a cultish situation, which is potentially dangerous for many reasons. Please pray that the U.S. and the world be protected from the darkness that moves through Donald Trump and his followers.
