Metaphysics is defined as " the study of any of the most fundamental concepts and beliefs about the basic nature of reality, on which many other concepts and beliefs rest." (Wikipedia Encyclopedia). Generally, it is a philosophical discipline that examines the nature of being and the relations among beings, going beyond (meta) what physics and other sciences can affirm through the study of empirical data.
In this series, we will study metaphysics in the light of Christian revelation, taking a general, introductory approach while drawing attention to the implications for spiritual practice. If you're new to this type of discussion, don't worry -- you won't be left in the dust. And if you're an "old pro" at it, then your input and critique will be especially valued on the discussion forum.
Resources: full access to the following will be provided to registered participants
- Numerous handouts and references to web pages. Click here for a sneak preview of one of them.
- Premium group discussion forum, where you can discuss the topics with Dr. St. Romain and other participants.
Course Topics: these will be presented via e-mail on Wednesdays and archived on the discussion forum for future reference and discussion. They are as follows:
- The Nature of God - what Christian revelation tells us about "what" God is: a Supreme Being, and all that is implied. We will go over several divine attributes and see how these can inform our God-image.
- God and creation - what is the relation between God and creation? This session reviews several distinctive contributions of the Judeo-Christian tradition that have significant metaphysical implications.
- Levels of creation - can we really say that some creatures have a higher level of being than others? (Why. . .yes!) Here we will go over some traditional ways of understanding these levels, especially the distinctions between spiritual and physical beings.
- Human nature - we are like amphibians capable of living in both the spiritual and physical worlds. This session explores the understanding of a human being as body and spiritual soul.
- Wounded human nature - what does this mean? Does it still make sense to speak of a "fall from grace?" (Rest assured!) What did the Fall do to human nature?
- Restoration in Christ - what kind of a being was Jesus Christ? What was accomplished (metaphysically) by his death, resurrection and ascension? What happens to those who become joined with him?
