This piece by 20/20's John Stossel shows that public schools are as capable of success as private ones when parents are empowered by voucher programs that promote competition, i.e, the students must succeed, or the teachers lose their jobs. Now, that's not much different in other industries. If the food's bad at a local eatery, you go down the street to another one, and the bad cook gets fired and replaced with one that can bring the business back. However, and not suprisingly, teachers unions are adamantly opposed to such changes, inspite of failing measures of student performance nation-wide. With no tenure, which is the jewel of entitlement within academia, the fat gets cut out. Such blind fervor reminds me of far right or far left politics, where merit has relatively little influence or appeal.
