Many people find counseling limited by the way meaning is cultivated and contained mostly at the verbal level, and since most addictions and wounds that open us to the existential include both verbal and non-verbal awareness, approaches that access both are essential. Here's an article discussing a blend of Gendlin's "Focusing" and "Hakomi," a body-centered form of psychotherapy. I recommend those suffering from addiction to ground their 12 Step work in a form of therapy that generates a friendly sense of the body, since its intelligence is intimate and crucial to the healing process where longings are distorted.
