Besides the violence and precipitating influences, what stands out in this coverage is the description of the Moslem population in Australia being largely insular and low-income. How coincidental in likeness to France? The standard description is to account for this as the failed responsibility of the government to integrate immigrants, or at least provide enough compensation. But little or nothing is said of the resistance within these Moslem communities to the incentives that make integration mostly a process of assimulation. If the choice is between preserving the extended family system and individualism, then one would expect to see the trends that currently exist. It's one thing to complain about poverty, and quite another to decline the existing process of overcoming that condition when doing so offends and undermines the subculture.

One wonders if it isn't a matter of time before something like this happens in the U.S. In Wichita, however, it seems the Moslems (the few I know, that is) are much better integrated into the culture. I wonder what the situation is in other cities.
